Let It Go: Releasing the Ego’s Grip Through Yoga Nidra

Full disclosure: I’ve never seen Frozen. When it hit theaters, my kids were teenagers and my Disney movie duties were long behind me. I didn’t see the film, but I have heard that song—“Let It Go.” And even though I’ve missed the full context, I think I get the point.

Letting go.

That universal phrase we toss around when something no longer serves us. Something we’ve been trying to control, fix, or figure out—and finally recognize, we just can’t. We don’t have to know the plot of Frozen to understand the power behind those words. Because every one of us has something we’re gripping tightly, hoping our efforts will somehow change the outcome or soften the blow. But as we all come to realize—often the hard way—control is mostly an illusion.

The only real control we have is over how we respond to the present moment.

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It means surrendering our resistance to reality. It means no longer arguing with “what is,” as Eckhart Tolle puts it. When we fight reality, we suffer. When we accept it, we open ourselves to peace.

And who does the arguing? The ego.

The ego wants what it wants—and throws a fit when it doesn’t get it. It whispers stories of injustice, disappointment, and lack. It convinces us that happiness lies somewhere “out there,” in the next fix, the next win, the next change in circumstances. And if we’re not careful, we fall into its trap—trying to shape the world to meet its demands, rather than turning inward to find peace.

Here’s the thing: the ego doesn’t see the truth. It reacts from fear, from old wounds, from illusion. And when we live through that lens, we lose sight of our deeper self—the part of us that already knows how to be still, how to accept, how to trust.

So what do we do when we feel the ego’s grip tightening—when our thoughts spin, our emotions surge, and our peace feels out of reach?

We stop.

We breathe.

We Let It Go.

This is where Yoga Nidra becomes a lifeline. More than just a relaxation practice, Yoga Nidra is a guided journey that gently unhooks us from the ego’s demands. It draws us into the truth of the present moment—the only moment we actually have. In this deeply restful state of awareness, we experience ourselves beyond the thinking mind, beyond the story, beyond the struggle.

In Yoga Nidra, we don’t push or fix—we allow. And in that allowing, the grip of ego begins to loosen. We soften. We surrender. We remember who we really are.

Tonight’s Yoga Nidra practice is themed around Letting Go.

Is there something you need to release? A thought, a feeling, a belief, or behavior that no longer serves you? Bring it with you tonight—not as something to fight or banish, but something to witness, acknowledge, and gently unravel.

Together, we’ll begin the process of letting go of the ego’s grip—so we can make more space for peace, joy, and love.

Let it go. Let it be. Let yourself come home.

With love,
Kirsten
